Blues top Canucks in shootout; 600th coaching win for Hitchcock

Blues top Canucks in shootout; 600th coaching win for Hitchcock

The St. Louis Blues got shootout goals from Andy McDonald and Alex Steen and Brian Elliott stopped both of his attempts as the Blues scored a 2-1 shootout win over the Vancouver Canucks, Tuesday night in St. Louis. The win was also the 600th for coach Ken Hitchcock. Recently acquired defenseman Jay Bouwmeester scored his first goal as a member of the Blues, coming at 10:50 of the third period that tied the game at 1-1. The Canucks had a 1-0 lead on a powerplay goal from Alexander Edler with 13 seconds left in the second period. Hitchcock became the 11th coach in NHL history and second active (Joel Quenneville is the other) to reach 600 victories. Along with Hitchcock, six of them have coached the Blues at one point — Scotty Bowman, Al Arbour, Jacques Martin, Quenneville and Mike Keenan. Hitchcock’s first came on Jan. 22, 1996, with the Dallas Stars beating the Canucks 6-4 in Vancouver. The losing goaltender that night was Corey Hirsch, now Hitchcock’s goalie coach. Heyward’s second homer, Upton’s eighth and Uggla’s third were all solo shots off reliever Kelvin Herrera (1-1), who gave up three hits, four runs and one walk in two-thirds of an inning. Atlanta’s 10-game winning streak is its longest since 15 straight from April 15-May 2, 2000. Chris Getz homered in the top of the third to tie the game at 1-1 and the Royals took a 2-1 lead in the fourth when Salvador Perez reached on a Francisco throwing error, and later scored on Jeff Francoeur’s RBI single. Alex Gordon singled home a run in the ninth for the Royals, who have lost three out of four. Jeremy Guthrie got a no-decision after tossing seven innings, allowing just those two homers and striking out six. This was just the Royals second loss in Guthrie’s last 14 starts dating back to last season.
